Hypermarket is the name used for superstores which exceeds a certain size. The word hypermarket is derived from the French word ‘hypermarche’, which is a combination of a supermarket and a department store.
In the United Kingdom, the term ‘hypermarket’ is more rarely used than in other parts of Europe with retailers preferring to use the better-known ‘superstore’ tag.
Carrefour, the French retail group, opened the first hypermarket near Paris in 1962. In Spain, the largest hypermarkets are Eroski and Hipercor.
In the French concept, it also sells all possible goods, with consumers paying at the same cashier for food and non-food products.
Normally a retail store with sales are of over 2500sqm, with at least 35% of selling space devoted to non-grocery products is termed as a hypermarket.
The hypermarkets are designed to attract customers from a significant large area with their low price offers, unique range and offers.
Since the start of the French supermarkets formula, the range of non-food products available on the shelves has been defined widely from clothing to consumer electronic to pleasure goods, and it was continuously expanded until the early 1990s, transforming the hypermarket into a mini mall on its own.
